10 Local Photography Insta Accounts you need to follow!

Updated: May 12, 2020

Probably my favourite photographer on the platform. His style and aesthetic is very similar to mine with a focus on black and white street silhouettes predominantly. Along with this he’s a very talented film maker so check out his ArtHoundFilm Instagram account. If you want to learn more about Joel and the way he shoots check out my Interview him here.

He’s one of the areas best and most loved photographers for good reason. His stunning landscapes are unparalleled, with beautiful rich sunsets, atmospheric black and whites and stunning wide panoramas he is the visual figurehead of the Birmingham area. If you’ve been to Birmingham its likely you’ve seen a Ross Jukes photograph. His love for Birmingham is like nothing I have ever witnessed before and like nothing I’m likely to witness again. To add the cherry on top of the cake he showcases that traditional formal photography education isn't required to succeed in the industry having taught himself everything he knows.

This one is a slight cheat but oh well. Whilst he does live in Birmingham [I believe] most of his work is from elsewhere in the UK but he is still very much a local talent. He has a vast portfolio of breathtaking panoramic long exposures along the South, North and West coasts that will leave you scrolling through his account for hours.

He easily makes the list just for some of his most recent posts. One of his most recent black and whites of an easter hunt had a real dreamy, ethereal feeling that really portrayed the innocence of childhood, check it out. As for some of his close up street photography work, I will always commend anyone that can do it and do it well like Dan Parkes can.

Ive followed Steve for some time now and theres a reason. His account is littered with such variety. One day you get a beautiful landscape reflection of the Elan Valley the next a long exposure wire wool image in the Barr beacon. A real multitalented photographer that deserves more recognition.

The self proclaimed “King of Digbeth” boasts a portfolio of work like no other on the list. Andy Smart specialises in the grittier side of the city, very often capturing graffiti and urban cityscapes; his images are in stark contrast to those of Ross Jukes, but in no way less impressive.

The co runner of the account I’m going to discuss next, Fay is an integral part of the photography community here in Birmingham. Her talent for co-running and organising events for WestMidlandsPhotoCollective is matched by her talents as a photographer. Her feed is packed with variety from cityscapes to wildlife photography. If you love wildlife photography you must check out her collection of puffin photos, a breathtaking portrayal of a sometimes forgotten bird.

If you want to see the best photos from some of the best photographers Birmingham has to offer you must check out these two accounts. Both accounts repost images daily of their favourite images from in and around Birmingham so you never miss them. WestMidlandsPhotoCollective also offer the weekly ‘Viewfinder’ to give you an insight of events going on in the city that weekend, some that might make a great photography project.

Whilst his name shows that Birmingham is his city, one of my favourite collections of his is his New York City Series which showcases some beautiful aerial shots of the New York skyline. As well as this, in ‘Ross Jukes’ style, most of his photos are took during the golden hours giving his shots an almost surreal glow. Im excited to see what he has in store next.

So thats some of my favourite accounts from the Birmingham area, I would love to hear yours, feel free to leave a message on my website or my Instagram where I'm most active and happy shooting!
